Watch Out for Debt Relief Scams

Being over our heads in debt is something that most of us would not choose for ourselves, but unfortunately, it happens. One day we wake up and realize that we are in deep, and find ourselves drowning in a sea of debt that can be somewhat of our own making. Just as a person who is drowning grasps for the nearest thing possible to hold on to keep them from drowning, a person who is overwhelmed by debt is tempted to grab a hold of anything in reach to rescue them from their indebtedness.

There are many people these days that are drowning in debt, and there are many companies out there tossing them lifelines promising to rescue them. However, not all debt relief agencies are throwing out true lifelines; some are making promises to help people with debt that they, the companies, simply cannot keep. A person who is deep in debt is in a very vulnerable state; it is unfortunate that this is where a scam artist posing as a legitimate debt relief agency could come in and take advantage of somebody struggling with a major debt problem. It is important for people who are financially underwater to know that not all the companies who are offering them debt relief are offering them legitimate help. There are debt relief companies out there that are nothing more than scam operations that are trying to make a quick buck at the expense of somebody else's hardship. A person who is in debt and seeking assistance to get out of debt needs to do their homework and exercise extreme caution when looking for debt assistance.

If you happen to be one of the many having problems with debt, and you are considering looking for a debt relief program, I would like to offer a few words of advice that could hopefully help you not to be took advantage of. The first thing I would recommend for you to do is to talk to your creditors, see if you can work something out with them. It is in a creditor's best interest to work with you and help you to be able to pay them what you owe them. If you have creditors calling you, do not be afraid to answer the phone and try to work out a plan with them to payoff your debt. As I mentioned before, it is in their best interest to work with you and help you to be able to pay back your debt.

If after calling your creditors and attempting to work out a solution with them you are still unable to come up with a plan to eradicate your debt, then you may want to seek assistance from a debt relief company. But you need to do your due diligence and be very careful in choosing a debt relief company. There are companies out there that will say one thing and do another; you want to stay away from these companies. Here are some things that you should do to keep yourself from being scammed.

Lookout for red flags; those signals that could suggest that a particular debt relief agency may not be on the up and up. One red flag to look for is a high fee up front to take care of your debt. There are people who relate horror stories of how they have paid a high fee up front only to lose the cost of the fee that they paid, and remain in debt. When a person is struggling to pay their bills, the last thing that they need is to give money away to a debt relief agency that does nothing to help them get out of debt. In seeking out a debt relief company you should ask a lot of questions about the fees and make sure that you get the answers in writing. If you ask questions about fees and fail to get clear answers then you should go someplace else for assistance.

In addition to looking for red flags in checking out debt relief options, you should shop around and check out a company's reputation with the Better Business Bureau, or other agencies such as the TASC, USOBA, IAPDA, etc... You should check out their certifications and find out how long that they have been in business to help you to know whether they are going to be a company that you want to use.

While there are some companies that are out there to just get your money and offer very little in the way of debt relief, there are some legitimate debt settlement and credit counseling companies that can help you to find a solution to your debt problem. A good company will take time and help you come up with the right solution just for you. When it comes to helping people get out of debt, there is not one right answer for all people, but there are different approaches for different situations. Some of the people who get credit counseling find that they do not need debt management but just some help in devising a game plan to manage their debt.

So if you are in major debt and considering getting outside assistance; shop around, ask questions, and make sure you do your homework to find the company that can help you get some real debt relief.
