Debt Relief Agencies - Finding the right one
Most likely you found our site because you are having problems managing your debt. You are not alone. Millions of households in the United States today are juggling balances on their credit cards, have unpaid medical bills, or have other forms of unsecured debt that total in the tens of thousands of dollars. After a while, it just becomes too much to handle. And you need help.
Current Economy
As I write this in February of 2009, the United States is in a recession, with numbers approaching those not seen in almost 30 years (1982). Many, many people are not only struggling with debt, but also having trouble paying utilities, buying groceries, and filling their gas tank, the entire time wondering if the next day they go to work will be their last.
Buyer Beware
With so many people needing help with their debt today, it is only natural that the debt relief industry has grown as it has. Unfortunately, not all counseling and settlement agencies are reputable.
What to look for
While basic, many people don't follow these simple suggestions when considering a debt relief agency to work with. Remember, they will be handling alot of your money, and giving you guidance on how you should deal with your creditors.
- Shop around
Most consulting agencies offer a free, no credit check analysis of your current financial situation. Take advantage, and contact a few agencies, both national and local. Hear what they have to say, and what they can offer you. But be on guard; If something smells fishy, just walk away. First impressions are the most important.
- It's not easy
Debt Settlement and Credit Counseling offer great benefits once completed. However, it's not going to be the easiest thing to do. Not only will you have to alter your spending habits; your credit rating will be temporarily damaged, and you may have to deal with continued calls from your creditors. A good agency will be able to give you guidance throughout the process on handling these issues.
- Check with the BBB
Every agency that ExperienceDebtRelief.com works with has been certified by the Better Business Bureau. The BBB has on record complaints that have been made about the agency in question. Check them out. If there are alot of complaints, or they have a poor grade, then it's probably a good idea to look at other agencies.
- IAPDA or AICCCA Accreditation
The International Association of Professional Debt Arbitrators provides training and certification to consultants working in the debt settlement industry. For credit counseling, the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies provides the certification. If your consultant does not have either of these, you may have problems in the future.
- Have they been around for a while?
It seems like many agencies have popped up over night. While it is a relatively new main-stream industry, make sure they didn't just set up shop last week. At the very minimum, they should have been in business a few years. The longer, the better.
- Ask Around
Maybe you know someone who went through the debt settlement process. If so, ask them about it, and the company they worked with. Message board forums are another good place to ask.
These are only some of the things to look for when choosing an agency to work with. Use common sense. It's your money, your credit, your future. Make sure they are all handled correctly.
